The latest round of capitalist roulette has placed Tumblr at risk of malfunction or collapse. Not a lot of official news is available yet, but what there is sounds ominous.  Are you moving to Dreamwidth?  Find your Tumblr friends here.

Tumblr’s parent company, Automattic, has announced layoffs -- about 16% of its employees. TechCrunch is reporting 281 Automattic employees have lost their jobs. It’s unclear how many of those Automattic employees are Tumblr staff.

[community profile] moodthemeinayear  has opened Part 3! For anyone who wants to join in for just the Minimum or Medium Tracks, they've both restarted with this Part. And it can also be fun just to watch the community!

You can also play Mood Theme Bingo.

At least a couple themes from the previous year have been added as standard Dreamwidth mood themes that anyone can use, including the Jellyfish (assorted colors) and Fancy Rats. \o/

Here are a couple of community activity updates from [personal profile] soc_puppet:

[community profile] moodthemeinayear is nearing its next break period! It begins on Wednesday. Following that break, the Minimum and Medium Tracks will reset, so it's a great time to jump on for anyone who wants a schedule to follow.

[community profile] summerofthe69's amnesty period will end on Monday, with theme suggestions for 2025 set to open on Wednesday. Voting for themes will begin in May, so you have plenty of time to ponder theme suggestions.

100 things you can do on your personal website

Below, I list many things you can do on your personal website. This post is not meant to be a checklist so much as a source for inspiration. Perhaps one of the ideas below will take you down a delightful rabbit hole that leads you to new learnings. Perhaps an idea will bring you joy. Perhaps some ideas aren’t right for your site, but that still get you thinking.

Some of these are things you can do on Dreamwidth or another platform where you have a site.  Others require your own website and/or a considerable amount of coding skill.

Stop Talking to Each Other and Start Buying Things: Three Decades of Survival in the Desert of Social Media

Prodigy was upset that people were, by and large, using the free communication service they tossed on there just to have more content and not their weird Random Garbage You Don’t Need Storefront. And in many ways, that complaint has only gotten louder over the decades. Stop talking to each other and start buying things. Stop providing content for free and start paying us for the privilege. Stop shining sunlight on horrors and start advocating for more of them. Stop making communities and start weaponizing misinformation to benefit your betters.

It’s the same. It’s always been the same. Stop benefitting from the internet, it’s not for you to enjoy, it’s for us to use to extract money from you. Stop finding beauty and connection in the world, loneliness is more profitable and easier to control.

Stop being human. A mindless bot who makes regular purchases is all that’s really needed.

Google's IOS app now adds their links to your website to suck away your traffic, unless you go through a tedious process to opt out.  There's a word for this in zoology: kleptoparasitism

One way to hide spoilers for people who don't want them, while presenting content notes for those who do want them, is to use a graybar. This makes the text and background the same color (except for links, so watch out for those). To read the text, just highlight it and the words will pop out.

[personal profile] onlyknownothing has pointed out that the Wayback Machine is down. Read more about the problem here. While this is among the most popular archives, it is not the only one. When it comes to data backups, more is better. Explore different archive sites, because they do things differently -- what won't save on one usually will save on another. When one is down, others are probably still up. Here are some options...

I have three different posts that rotate on Wednesdays. These are recurring posts where I just copy and paste the same text, and you can find them on my Recurring Posts tag. Read more about how to use recurring posts here. I created these after a friend mentioned how fragmented society is becoming and how few people have close friends to share their lives. These posts invite people to interact with each other and share their ups and downs or just hang out.  They create a sense of community within an audience.

Cohost is closing. Registration shut down on September 9 when the closure was announced. It will go read-only on October 1, 2024 and disappear entirely at the end of 2024. See "Cohost News" for more on this topic and what you can do about it. Use the "Introduction / Friending Meme" to say hello and meet new people or find your Cohost friends here. A mourning post is here.

If you are on Cohost, you may find Dreamwidth a viable replacement. Scroll down for more resources about this.

For people on any other service, this is an opportunity to scoop new users. Listen to why people liked Cohost and say they will miss it. Does your favorite service meet any of those needs? If so, encourage people to move there instead. Gathering more of your friends together will make any service more fun to use.

For example, people have described Cohost as friendly, creative, innovative, user-expressive, community-oriented, with good features and moral developers. Dreamwidth has free, paid, and premium levels so you can choose the package that suits your needs. It offers private blogs, themed communities, and pretty robust moderation tools that let you delete comments you don't want on your blog or block people so they can't bother you. It's easy to find bloggers you like and nurture a sense of community. You can make short posts, carry long conversations, share images, and so on. Want a hate-free online space? It's not that hard to make one. Want to make a Cohost-like experience on Dreamwidth? Consider starting a community or using feeds. Looking for communities on your favorite topics to replace the Cohost accounts that you used to enjoy? Check out [community profile] followfriday for suggestions, or watch [site community profile] dw_community_promo. You can also use the search box in your blog header or the Interests page. Community Thursdays is just a custom of folks posting what they've done in communities recently, whether posting or commenting.
