one benefit to icons on dreamwidth , when compare to other platforms , is ability to set icon per post . any chosen icon will always appear with that post - which is great if happen to be plural and different members have unique icons , if some flavour of alterhuman and like to show different forms , or even if just multigender or genderfluid in some way .
however , there is one thing which can mess up these icons ...
of course , upload of icons require keywords , which work as pointers to find again later .
so say for example that headmate barry change name to patrick . well , will of course want to update that icon keyword .
but , there is one important checkbox to not miss in this process : " rename keywords " .
if do happen to miss this , then all posts which previously use barry keyword icon , will now revert to default icon - because effectively , barry keyword icon is gone now , and patrick keyword icon might as well be entirely new one .
so save pain and heartbreak of lose icons from previous posts and comments - remember to check off " rename keywords " . augh .

Yes ...

Date: Oct. 9th, 2024 01:40 am (UTC)I have to admit, I've seen you around in specifically that capacity so much that I actually looked up to see if you were part of the administrators here. It's very welcoming having users so invested in making this a good place for others that they take this level of time and effort to make things more pleasant for newcomers. 😊

Date: Oct. 9th, 2024 02:59 am (UTC)What, for Dreamwidth as a whole? LOL no. I can't code, I think all those folks are genuine computer wizards. I'm just an oldschool activist, I know to look for the things I can do. So yes, I've put a lot of energy into outreach in hopes of expanding Dreamwidth's user base. (But I'm flattered that you thought I might be on the development team, wow.)

I've seen other folks doing it in the past. Used to be every fandom had a "Welcommittee" of volunteers who reached out to new fans and helped them get involved. That's no longer the norm, which is sad. But anyone who knows the technique can use it.
Thank you!
Date: Oct. 9th, 2024 01:15 am (UTC)Since I know lots of Cohost refugees have mentioned loving the multiple-icon feature of Dreamwidth:
* You get 15 slots free with a basic account.
* You 150 slots with a standard paid account.
* You get 300 slots with a premium paid account.
So just think about how many you want or need, and choose your account type accordingly. The paid accounts do help support Dreamwidth so the platform keeps going, but not everybody needs the extra features.

Wow!
